Hybrid Systems
A hybrid system is where there is a combination of generators (wind turbine, solar PV, hydro etc.) to produce electricity. One of the most common renewable combinations is wind and solar PV which brings together a wind turbine and solar photovoltaic panels in one system.
Wind and solar PV complement each other very well because the wind turbine performs very well during the winter when the weather is far more windy. PV is not as productive during the winter when there is less sunlight. PV, however, performs very well during the summer when there is greater sunlight. Wind makes up for the lack of PV power during the winter. PV makes up for the lack of wind power during the summer.
Renewable technologies that are often combined in a hybrid system are: wind turbines, solar PV panels and hydropower. Other technologies can also be combined with these renewables but the most common are diesel generators.
